MY STORY:
My name is Trina Henderson, and I am a 51 year old mother of five with two grandchildren. I am recently separated from, and divorcing my husband after 34 years together. Although I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Operations Management in 2022, this was not my initial career choice. I was in my third year of the registered nursing program when COVID happened, then my school shut down for three years. So in an effort to not lose my progress, I transferred from Riverside City College to Southern New Hampshire university online; which is how I was able to graduate with my degree in Operations Management. But have since found it to be quite difficult to find employment in that field; therefore, I am currently working as a nursing assistant which I have done off and on for the last 15 years. I have decided to redirect my life and become a vocational nurse, the reason I am choosing LVN over completing my RN. Is due to the fact that I would have to redo all of my sciences because so much time has already passed since COVID came and went, it would take me two to three years to redo my prerequisites for the registered nursing program. Therefore, LVN would be a better choice for me at this point in life. Unfortunately, in the state of California, which is where I reside. This state offers minimal assistance when returning to school to get another degree after you have already graduated, therefore. I am seeking assistance to help with my tuition cost, as well as rent and bills since I am now on my own and rent is $1595 per month. I am currently only making $23.00 an hour, which does not cover all of my monthly expenses. Although I do not qualify for any Pell grants because I am a recent graduate, I was able to secure some financial aid by way of additional student loans. However, I was not able to qualify to cover my total tuition costs which leaves me to pay $19,000 out of pocket for tuition to be Become a nurse. Any assistance you can provide would be greatly appreciated to help me towards my goal of becoming a licensed vocational nurse, and I wholeheartedly thank you in advance.
MY GOAL:
My goal for the future is to complete my education and become a nurse as I have always planned to do, and use that to create a better life and future for my children and my grandchildren. After graduation, and maybe gaining some on the job experience and knowledge as a nurse. I do plan to continue on to finally complete my registered nursing program sometime in the near future.
