My friend Emily was taken from her abusive mother and placed in foster care when she was two. For the next 16 years she moved from one foster family to another until she turned 18, at which time she was considered an adult and left on her own. She got a job at a local restaurant, where I also worked at the time. She worked hard, got her own apartment, and bought herself a car. At 20 Emily was diagnosed with cancer. She became so sick from the treatments that she was unable to work most days and lost her job, her car, and her home. Emily had no family to turn to and I could not let her live on the streets so five months ago she came to live with me.
Emily has no insurance. Her medication alone has been running from $700 a month on up, not to mention the costs for tests and doctor’s visits. We aren’t even looking at the bills from the hospital. I have been helping her all I can. I attend San Diego State University and work taking care of two children three days a week. However, the money I make is not enough to cover Emily’s medical bills and our living expenses. We are nearly three months behind in rent ($2,850). Our landlord has been very understanding but I know this won’t continue much longer. I have maxxed out my credit cards to pay Emily's medical costs – Discover ($2,500), 2 Visa cards ($4,000) and 2 Mastercard ($3,050). Even my boyfriend has been helping and has maxxed out two of his credit cards. Emily works as a waitress when she can, but she is sick more often than well, and she also sells Avon, but our combined incomes just don’t pay our living expenses and her medical expenses.
That is why I am BEGGING for your help. If we lose our apartment I could move in with my boyfriend but Emily has nowhere to go and without help to pay her medical expenses she will surely die. I can’t bear the thought of having to turn her out or refuse to help her any longer. She is a sweet girl who just needs a chance at life.
