The Challenge
My brother faces a tough challenge. Last year, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Though he's now in maintenance mode and feeling well, the medical bills wiped out his savings, including what he had set aside for a down payment on a home. Despite this setback and the demanding housing market, my brother hasn't lost sight of his dream to provide a stable home for his growing family.
The Dream
My brother and his family have been renting, aiming to buy a home where his kids can have a yard to play in and where they can be part of a close-knit community. They're ready to buy, with stable income and good credit in place, but they're stuck without the $15,000 needed for a down payment. Ironically, while my brother just got a new job and now earns enough to support his family, he's been caught in a paradox where his income is just over the threshold to qualify for down payment assistance programs. Yet, the soaring prices and competitive nature of the housing market make it nearly impossible to afford a home without it.
