Became My Mother’s Caregiver and Financially Devastated

Bookmark and Share

I have been a professional engineer for over 40 years, fortunate enough to travel the entire world for my job in the offshore oilfield industry. Started my career straight out of high school as an apprentice for under privileged youth way back in 1971. Thanks be to God, because my parents with 6 children and only a 10th grade education wouldn’t have been able to send me to college. As you can imagine I grew up in a very poor, rough area of Houston Texas without a lot of prospects for a young black kid at the time. But I didn’t let that discourage me.

I worked my entire life making sure to make a better life for my family, determined to give my parents a better life than they had. Things were going well for a lot of years, we weren’t rich, but we were doing better than before. After some years things took a serious turn and it all changed. My father passed from cancer, I lost my daughter to a brain aneurysm and then the mother of all disasters COVID-19 hit as if that wasn’t enough. I was forced to retire because I was diagnosed with cancer, and it wasn’t safe for me to travel anymore.

Even with the forementioned issues in my life I did the best I could to work through all the adversity that had beset the family. But as life goes on this last straw broke it all, my mother had a severe stroke, and I became her caregiver for the past 2 years. Needless to say, it has financially destroyed me, I've never experienced these kinds of challenges before in my life but it’s my mother. I’ve lost my home on 45 acres and my entire life savings where I thought that I was well prepared for my retirement years at the age of 70. You can never save enough for this with the cost of health care in America. I don't know if this is going to work or not, but now I'm at my breaking point.

I've done a lot in my life to help other people and all I'm trying to do is figure out a way to survive and get back on our feet financially. My ultimate goal would be to raise $25000 or more to get she and I a place to live as we struggle to pay bills and buy food. If I had $10,000, that I could put into a small business for passive income this would change our whole entire life. Every single month, we struggle to pay the rent and the car payment with nothing left. I have worked hard my whole life not to ever be in this position that I now find myself. Anything at all that you could possibly give would be extremely helpful.
