Hello and thank you for viewing my message. I am a mother of two that’s trying to provide for my beautiful babies. I was recently enrolled at a nationally accredited school for a certificate in medical coding. I started in Jan 2024, shortly after finding housing after being homeless since October of last year. That situation for sure not my fault but I digress. Anyway, I guess I can say I started at a bad time. I could barely get help to watch my kids while I do homework/complete assignments. Fell severely behind in spring 2024. I went ahead and enrolled in summer classes assuming I was eligible to use my federal financial aid. This was not the case.
I was contacted by student success who then said I was not eligible to use financial aid and that I would have to pay for 12 credits out of pocket. I’m left with a $900 tuition bill. Not to mention, these were half session courses (7 week accelerated course) so I was registered for three other classes that would have started in early July, but I had to drop those courses so I wouldn’t be left with a $1,500 tuition bill. I work full time but me and my children are living in a single parent home due to a recent DV incident. I pay all the bills. No food stamps, high daycare copays. Ultimately, I need help with my tuition bill and just enroll in a ‘at-my-own pace’ program through USCI.
Although, I already have a bachelor’s of science through another school. I also have a post-bacc certificate in paralegal studies from the same school I have the tuition bill. I am also in the process of becoming a Certified Paralegal-I have to study for the exam. When applying for the exam I believe I have to provide my transcript, so this tuition bill could hinder me from completing either of those goals.
Now I am freaking out; frantically looking for second jobs I can do. I have a car but need a new one, it’s running rough no matter what I do and I do not have any money to buy a used car. If I had the money to buy a used car, I feel like I would need at least $8K. I don’t want nothing flashy but something that’ll help me support my kids with no worries. Hopefully someone could spare something for my paralegal certification program, that cost $380 through NALA. I would love to buy practice exams, those are $45 but I’m working on that at least.
I just want to be able to take care of my kids comfortably. I do not care if I have to get a second job. Medical coding was going to be my second job honestly. I just got overwhelmed and dropped the ball. I really need help with these things. If you can spare anything, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you for reading this message.
